Design thinking: developing new and meaningful technology

When Sean Carney was approached by Philips six years ago, he wasn’t compelled to leave his design job at a leading technology company and the sunshine and warmth of California. Then something changed. However, with some reluctance, he agreed to come in for an interview. “Philips had a very capable design team, which was one of the largest in the world,” he says. “I thought it was worth the discussion.” But he still turned down the job. After a few months, he received a second call to come back for a conversation with Frans van Houten, who was at that time the incoming CEO. “We spent three hours together where he talked about his vision to transform Philips into a health tech company,” he says. Sean always believed that for design to be effective it needed to have sponsorship within the organization. And to have that sponsorship come from an incoming CEO gave him the confidence he needed. “Frans understood the strategic value of design in helping transform Philips, which was very compelling. So, I decided to take the leap and join Philips,” he says.
